Films such as Velvet Goldmine and American Psycho went a long way to cement him as one of the most interesting actors of our time, and the harrowing film The Machinist garnered him still more praise for the lengths he went to to play the role (He is almost skeletal in the film).
The underrated 2002 science fiction action movie Equilibrium proved to audiences that he knew his way around stunts and fight choreography, which would put him in good stead to play the dark knight himself, Batman, in two films thus far.
Batman Begins saw Bale starring alongside Liam Neeson, Gary Oldman, Cilian Murphy and Michael Caine, and he held his own amongst a crowd of very strong actors. While its sequel The Dark Knight, co-starring the late Heath Ledger as The Joker, was more successful by far, it is Batman Begins that remains a better film on the whole, thanks to its superior plotting, pacing and execution. There is, as yet, no word on whether he will don the cape and cowl for a third film.
In recent months Christian has been in the public eye for things other than his acting, namely a public fracas with his mother, and now a tirade from the actor, recorded on the set of Terminator Salvation, has surfaced as viral internet meme, remixed into a song and added to all manner of odd videos.
This is one temperamental actor whose work will interest many for years to come.
